National Scientific-Practical Institute of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

The Scientific and Practical Institute of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation was founded in August 2014 at the initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The establishment of the institute coincided with the preparation of Azerbaijani athletes for the 2015 European Games. The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, the First Lady of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Azad Rahimov.

The main goal of the institute is to provide comprehensive support for the development of high-performance sports and the rehabilitation of athletes representing Azerbaijan. The aim is to offer them the opportunity for a rapid and safe return to full training and participation in sports competitions. The institute's opening aims to improve sports results and enhance safety through international cooperation between doctors and coaches. The institute is also focused on training medical personnel in the fields of sports medicine, biomechanics, optical kinematics, and other related areas at a modern level.

An essential component of the institute’s work is the creation of the "Athlete's Medical Passport" database, which contains information on the physical development of athletes, the functional state of their bodies, the training process, recovery after injuries, diseases, and interventions, as well as the analysis of this data.

The institute has established and operates clinical, scientific, and educational divisions.

Mission

The development of sports medicine in the country, building rehabilitation for athletes based on scientific foundations, in accordance with modern requirements, and implementing medical-biological support in sports. 

The main activities of the institute include: 

  • the use of new technologies in sports medicine and rehabilitation, conducting fundamental and applied research in priority areas of science and technology;
  • carrying out scientific-practical and scientific-pedagogical activities in sports medicine and rehabilitation;
  • providing highly qualified medical care to athletes and sports enthusiasts, including consultative, diagnostic, preventive, and rehabilitation services;
  • training specialists according to the scientific directions of the institute.
